The Bach-Portal was conceived and is regularly updated by
Matthias Roeder. Mr. Roeder is currently a candidate for the PhD degree in
historical musicology at Harvard University. He has also studied classical
guitar at the Mozarteum University and philosophy at the University of Bonn,
Germany. However, his passion is musicology with particular emphasis on the life
and works of Johann Sebastian Bach.
The web page you are now visiting aims to present the best available
internet-resources for Johann Sebastian Bach. As Matthias puts it, "After
spending many hours surfing the web, I became increasingly frustrated by the
lack of easy access to accurate and reliable Bach source material. In the
present Bach-Portal I have tried to include not only material that is directly
concerned with Bach, but also to give references to related internet pages
dealing with other important baroque composers, who had - or might have had - an
impact on the life and musical development of the great Johann Sebastian. In
addition, you will find links to the major centers of Bach research world-wide
as well as information about his music, instruments used in his time and general
aspects of baroque performance practice."
"Finally, links are set up to give interested persons easier and faster
access to the information they desire. In general, I have omitted commercial
sites, but sometimes these pages are closely linked to important news such as
information about upcoming concerts or exhibitions. In such cases I have
provided the link with an appropriate caveat."
"In the soon-to-be-launched essay section you will find some of the best of
recent articles assuredly of interest to "Liebhaber und Kenner" as Bach himself
once put it. Please feel free to E-mail me with your suggestions, or in the
event that you would like to contribute one or more of your own essays please
